A carnival in August? You got that right!

If you’re visiting Malta this August, you won’t want to miss the Malta Summer Carnival taking place in Bugibba and other locations between Friday 23rd and Sunday 25th August. Throughout the weekend, the main square of Bugibba will become the destination for the most Instagram-worthy event of the summer. The Malta Summer Carnival is a staple in the local calendar. In recent years, it has become increasingly popular with visitors who love to dress up in their most colourful outfits and join in the outdoor party. Everybody is welcome!

The Maltese Gostra at the Malta Summer Carnival

The main events on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th August will take place in the town of Bugibba in the North of Malta. This includes the traditional ġostra, a game dating back to the period of the Knights of St John in Malta. A large pole is set up over the sea and covered in lard to make it extremely slippery and difficult to climb. Then, a number of brave participants attempt to climb the greasy pole, while onlookers cheer them on. Many epic falls will be seen as the climbers slip off the pole into the sea beneath them – but this doesn’t stop the determined participants from trying to capture the flag at the end of the pole!

It’s one of those ‘you need to see it to believe it’ moments. So, consider booking your accommodation in the nearby town of Qawra to be in walking distance from the Bugibba main square.

Beach by Day, Malta Summer Carnival by Night

It’s all fun and games in Bugibba during the Malta Summer Carnival, but you can still get to enjoy some quality time with family or friends when staying at a hotel in Qawra. Wake up at your own leisure, explore the top things to do in the area and head on down to the fantastic beaches nearby. Then make your way to the Bugibba main square for outdoor festivities, including live music, dancing, floats and street performances. Travelling with kids? No problem. Bring them along to the Malta Summer Carnival – they will absolutely love it!

On Sunday 25th August, the summer Carnival will move to the southern town of Marsaskala, where a parade will take place along the sea-side promenade from 19:00hrs onwards. You can get there by bus from the Bugibba bus terminus.
